I’m backing John Cryer in the Leyton & Wanstead selection

Ballot papers are currently being sent out for the Labour selection in Leyton & Wanstead and I’ve made up my mind – I’m going to be casting my vote for John Cryer. I was unable to attend the hustings yesterday so I’m going on the basis of the materials sent to members, e-mail communications I have received and – importantly – on the basis of the opinions of Labour people in the constituency I trust.

So why opt for John Cryer?

In short, John strikes me as the person who is best placed to sort things out in Leyton & Wanstead. Harry Cohen was a hard working and diligent local campaigner and John, having previously been MP for Hornchurch (and indeed a good one as far as I can determine), has the relevant experience. With the local council in a mess Leyton & Wanstead needs a tough, strong-willed campaigner willing to stand up for constituents and I’m not convinced that any of the other candidates are the right for that.

The local Labour Party also needs someone to rally around, someone who will motivate the long suffering activists to get out on the streets during the election campaign, and I think that John can do that.

A little more on Leyton & Wanstead

The shortlist for the Labour selection in Leyton & Wanstead has been published. The names on it are:

  • Tristram Hunt (still no site online, despite this)
  • John Cryer
  • Terence Paul (no website as far as I can tell)
  • Sophie Linden
  • Ahmad Shazad (no website as far as I can tell)
  • Rokhsana Fiaz (no website as far as I can tell)

Pretty shameful that only 2 of the 6 have any sort of online presence. Isn’t the web the best way to reach people in a selection? Time is short, the people voting are right across a constituency, and a simple website takes a matter of an hour to set up. Welcome to 2010, Labour…

My original thoughts on the selection are here, and there’s more from Peter Kenyon here and here.

Registered 2 days ago – tristramhunt.com – so is he up to something in Leyton & Wanstead?

There’s a piece on the website of the Leyton & Wanstead Guardian that Labour is rumoured to want historian Tristram Hunt as its candidate to follow Harry Cohen who’s standing down. The line is that Hunt would be worse than Dromey if someone were to be ‘imposed’ on Leyton and Wanstead and I agree. More of my thoughts on the selection here.

But any candidate needs a website, right? So I thought I would have a look around to see what domain name variants of Hunt’s name had been registered, and here is is – the WHOIS for tristramhunt.com (holding page only at present):

Registrant:

TRISTRAM HUNT

Phone: XXX
Email: TRISTRAMHUNT {at} BTOPENWORLD(.)COM

Registrar Name….: Register.com
Registrar Whois…: whois.register.com
Registrar Homepage: www.register.com

Domain Name: tristramhunt.com
Created on…………..: 2010-02-08
Expires on…………..: 2011-02-08

First of all it’s notable that the domain name was only registered 2 days ago, on 8th February. Second, isn’t it nice that he allows us to see his mobile number and personal e-mail address? Ever thought about WHOIS Privacy Tristram? (you can see the whole WHOIS here)

Anyway, it seems to confirm he’s up to something.

[UPDATE]
In light of comments I’ve probably been too tough to replicate Hunt’s data here, but all this remains in the publicly available WHOIS for the domain.

I’m a voter in the Leyton & Wanstead selection – make a case, but don’t spam me

A UK general election is on the horizon and my name is on the electoral register in the Leyton & Wanstead constituency in East London. As I’m a Labour Party member resident there for more than 2 years it means I have a vote in the selection procedure to see who will succeed Harry Cohen as the Labour candidate… Harry has always struck me as a pleasant and jovial (although perhaps ineffective) individual, but due to the expenses scandal it’s clear he has to go.

So what is happening actually? According to Peter Kenyon Leyton & Wanstead will be an open selection, presumably taking place rather soon. I trust there will be something about it in the post for me when I’m next in London next week…
